PlayStation 4 and Xbox 720 get new codenames

PlayStation 4 and the next Xbox have new codenames and projected release dates, if reports from anonymous sources with knowledge of Microsoft and Sony's operations are accurate. SemiAccurate reports (via our friends at Official PlayStation Magazine) that the consoles' super-secret spy monikers have shifted from "Orbis" and "Durango" to "Thebes and Kryptos", respectively.

The next Xbox has allegedly been codenamed Kryptos, with mass production on its silicon wafers slated to begin by the end of this year. Release soon after could be delayed, however, if reports of problems with fabricating the system's new AMD "Oban" processor are not overstated.

PS4 could ship as late as fall of 2014, the sources said, and in either case the system is still set to run on an AMD CPU and GPU fabricated in the new 28 nanometer standard. A previous reports similarly indicated AMD architecture for the new console, though it gave an earlier release window.

Both consoles are still likely to be revealed by their respective companies at some point next year.
